Windows Remote Desktop Connection

Windows Remote Desktop Connection tool comes bundled with the Windows installation pack. It is best enough to use to remotely access any computer if you are in Windows system. So if you are still finding for a simple remote desktop tool and did not yet go through the Remote Desktop Connection from the Accessories folder under Windows start menu programs, you can give it a try. Teamviewer

Teamviewer is no doubt a very popular application for the newbies to provide remote desktop access. It is easy to install and simple to recognize the interface. One of the end user can start a session by generating the unique Teamviewer id and password and supplying those to the partner to the other end. After getting connected, the active user can access the desktop of the remote computer, provide any type of support, transfer files etc.

Another very popular solution for the remote desktop connection is LogMeIn. Unlike Teamviewer, LogMeIn has two versions available: LogMeIn Freeand LogMeIn Pro. Both the free and pro versions provide a hassle-free interface to control remote computer. But the pro version comes with some extra flavor including  additional features like drag-and-drop file transfer, synchronization, and more meeting tools. LogMeIn Pro charges $13/month and $70/year. Where the Professional version gives more facilities, some people are still happy with the LogMeIn free version instead.

ThinVNC

ThinVNC comes in the limelight with a different approach of Remote Desktop Connection. This application can create browser based sessions, supported in the popular web browser like Firefox, Chrome, IE etc. As HTML 5 has introduced some advanced features, it takes that advantage and create a session for the partner computer and show the screens in the active users’ browser.

The only downside of this application is that it is not as easy to setup as the aforementioned Remote Desktop Connection tools. The user should have some minimum knowledge on IP address, Port etc.

But you can still go ahead step by step by following the proper instruction. Once you are done with the setup, you can create a session between remote computers from your home, Cyber-cafe or your college campus. ThinVNC is free of cost.

TightVNC (Linux/ Windows)

TightVNC is a open source, cross platform Remote Desktop Application. The mechanism of this application is simple. You have to set up a VNC server to the computer that you want to control remotely. Once your setup is done, you can access the computer from any where else in the web. You can also control TightVNC from a web browser instead of carrying the TightVNC client.

UltraVNC (Windows)

UltraVNC is a windows based application to control computers remotely. This application needs to setup a VNC at the target computer that you want to remotely control. Though it is Windows application, you can access the target computer from any operating system using the web browsers. This open source application serves some extra flavor with its features including file transfer support, text chat and support for optional plug-ins.

Chrome Remote Desktop Extension (update)
